Sources primaires

Les documents royaux des Archives nationales du Royaume-Uni conservés à Kew comprennent essentiellement trois principaux types de documents, la charte, le brevet et les rôles fermés. Heureusement, ils ont tous été transcrits à la fin du XIXe siècle dans ce que l'on appelle les calendriers des chartes et des rôles fermés et des lettres patentes. Ils sont publiés en plusieurs volumes pour les règnes de chaque roi anglais. Pour le XIIIe siècle, ces archives inestimables racontent en détail le rôle savoyard en Angleterre.

L'acte scellé anglo-saxon ayant évolué certainement vers 1199 en trois types de documents distincts, à savoir les chartes, les writs patent et les writs close. Les deux dernières au XIIIe siècle étaient également qualifiées de lettres patentes et de lettres closes. Les chartes, puisqu'elles conféraient généralement des droits et des propriétés à perpétuité, étaient les documents les plus solennels émis par la chancellerie. Ils étaient adressés à tous les sujets du roi, enregistraient généralement les noms de nombreux témoins et avaient le sceau apposé par des fils de soie. La différence entre les brefs patents et les brefs clos était que ces derniers étaient fermés, c'est-à-dire repliés, le sceau étant brisé à l'ouverture, tandis que les premiers étaient patents ou ouverts, le sceau étant attaché à une languette découpée dans le bas du document. . Les brefs fermés, généralement adressés à une seule personne ou institution et avec un seul témoin, étaient utilisés pour la masse des ordres administratifs de routine dont dépendait le gouvernement, ainsi que pour les brefs ouvrant les procédures juridiques de droit commun décrites plus loin. Les brefs patents, avec une forme générale d'adresse comme les chartes mais généralement avec un seul témoin, étaient utilisés pour accorder des exemptions, faire des nominations et proclamer une série de décisions gouvernementales.
